Mrs. Joan Marie McClanahan, 85, of St. Albans passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Joan was a devoted homemaker and a faithful 56-year member of Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church. She enjoyed cross stitching, gardening, caring for animals, and spending time doing word searches. Joan will be remembered for her loving heart, quiet strength, and dedication to her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph Fleet McClanahan and Edward Eugene Vassar, II; and daughter, Lillian Vassar.

She is survived by her children, Victoria Vassar, Deborah (William) Rucker, Priscilla Vassar, Charles William McClanahan, and Kelli (Larry) Fugate; sister, Bobby Lewis; brother, Charles Moses; grandchildren, Charles William McClanahan, Jr., Megan Danielle Mynes, Joseph Keith Fugate, Jaylan Gage (Kelly) Fugate, and Dillion Matthew Rucker; great-grandchildren, Jackson Paul Fugate, Charlie Jo Fugate, and Ella Mae Fugate; and a host of other family and friends.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the ICU staff at WVU Thomas Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Joan.

A tribute to the life of Mrs. Joan McClanahan will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Haven of Rest Memory Gardens with Tony Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the memory gardens. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service Saturday at the memory gardens.
