Samuel Cletis Stophel passed away on June 18, 2026 at Hubbard House in Charleston WV. He was 57 years old. He resided in Ripley, WV.
He grew up in Vienna, WV. He was a graduate of Parkersburg Catholic High School where he played football, and baseball. He was also a graduate of Glenville State University. He was employed by Builders First Source.
He loved spending time with his family, friends, and his dogs (Mazie and Hank). When his son was growing up, he loved watching him play sports. He enjoyed playing golf, coaching, and music.
Sam’s favorite instrument was the guitar which he started playing from a young age. He played by ear and loved to sit on his porch or in his recliner and play for hours.
Sam’s love of sports translated into his love of coaching so much he began his own travel team, the Biohazards. He enjoyed being able to help his young players find a passion for the sport. He cherished the friendships he found in the parents and players alike.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cletis and Jane Stophel, and grandparents Roy and Irene Gotham and James and Bertie Stophel.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years Cynthia of Ripley, WV, son Joel of Ripley, a sister Rebecca (Andrew) Earl of Morgantown WV, and a brother Mark Stophel of Weston, WV. He is also survived by 2 nephews Seth(Alexandra) Earl of Morgantown, Joshua(Brittany) Earl of St Thomas, PA and a great niece and nephew.
Per his wishes, he was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a later time.
