James Owen “Butch” Thompson, 73, of Chesapeake, WV passed away Sunday July 5, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family.
His parents, Isaac “Pug” and Betty Mays Thompson welcomed him at Kayford on July 15, 1952, and have now welcomed him in Heaven.
Butch was a member of UMWA District 17 and Teamsters 175, providing for his family mainly as a coal miner and a Coca-Cola delivery man.
After retiring, he spent his time with his family, as the crossing guard at Chesapeake Elementary, the president of the senior bowling league at Galaxy Lanes, and a member of Genesis Fellowship Church. He attended East Bank High School.
Those who will remain to miss him the most are Jeanie Bradley Thompson, his bride of 54 years; son, James II (Charity) of Nitro, and daughter, Rachel of Daytona Beach, FL; grandsons, Bradley and Caleb of Nitro and his furry four-legged daughter, Lola; sister, Pam Jarrell (David) of Charleston, WV; brother, Tim Thompson (Kelly) of East Bank, WV; sisters-in-law, Debbie Hartless of Chelyan, WV and Becky Bradley of Dunbar, WV; several nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.
While we are sad and miss him terribly, we ask that you attend the Celebration of Life in Butch’s honor with stories, smiles and laughs on August 1, 2026, 2:00pm at Genesis Fellowship Church, 4032 MacCorkle Avenue SW, South Charleston, WV 25309.
Butch’s long-time friends and counselors, Rev. Roger Gogus and Rev. Rick Pursley will be officiating. We ask that you dress comfortably and casually for the service and visitation with the family will be one hour prior before the service.
