Melinda Sue Ault was born on the 4th of July, and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe the firecracker that was my sister, Mindy.

Mindy was a fighter. She came into this world with many obstacles. She was blind and autistic, which made things more challenging, especially communication. But she was able to navigate around those barriers and get most of her needs met. Our parents were told she wouldn’t live to be six years old, but she showed them all and made it to 63!

I always loved my big sister, even when she hit me with her head or spit on me out of frustration. We had a bond from childhood that I will always cherish. I am so grateful that our family, including Mom, Dad, Mama, Papa, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, embraced her with such love.

Mindy defied the odds every single day. Knowing her made each of us better human beings. She taught us compassion, humility, and gratefulness. She also gave us a new perspective on the world around us. She was awed by the beauty of sunlight flickering between the branches. Watching how she experienced the world made all of us look at things differently. She could easily become overwhelmed by noise, which sometimes caused her to hit her head and yell. But through it all, she taught us so much about love, patience, and understanding.

I want to remember and thank all of the people who fought for my sister and loved her throughout her life. Including our Uncle Ken, who was her guardian for more than 30 years. This was truly a huge sacrifice he made for his niece, and I will always be grateful for the love and dedication he gave her.

I also want to thank Pastor Frank Chapman for being a regular visitor until he passed away. He kept the promise he made to our Mama, and that meant so much to our family.

And to all of her caregivers and nurses, especially Morgan and Kayla, thank you. Not only did you care for Mindy, but you always eased my worries with patience and kindness. Your compassion and love for her will never be forgotten.

Mindy, you were loved more than you could ever know. You fought through so much and taught us lessons that will stay with us forever. Your life made a difference in each of ours, and we are better people because of you.

You will always be our firecracker, our fighter, and our beloved Mindy. We love you and will miss you more than words can say.

Visitation will be held on November 21, 2026, beginning at 10 AM, with the funeral service following at 11 AM at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home with Pastor Pete Thompson officiating.
