James Thompson (Tom) Stump of Elkview passed away January 13, 2026 at home with his family by his side. Tom was born on July 8, 1949, as the first-born son of Web and Erma Stump who preceded him in death, along with Tom’s brothers Steve and Butch Stump.
Tom graduated from Herbert Hoover High School and shortly after graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army. Tom was sent to Vietnam in November of 1969 to October 1970. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; 2 Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Markman (Rifle) and Combat Infantryman Badge. Tom served his Country with pride and honor.
Tom retired from American Electric Power with over 30 years of service. Upon retirement he enjoyed attending his Veteran Support Group connecting with Vietnam Veterans and Veterans of all branches of the U.S. Military. He made so many friends and connection with the “brotherhood”. Tom also loved his family wholeheartedly. Tom built an amazing homestead for his wife Shirley and all their children and grandchildren to enjoy and make many memories. He so loved his farm and always looked forward to the summer hay days with his kids, son-n-laws and grandsons. He also loved the family cookouts which consisted of a mean game of wiffleball and Kickball. He would sit on the porch laughing at us being so competitive. Tom also loved turning his upstairs “man-cave” into the Saturday night “poker-cave”. He had his loyal buddy Jeff always attending those poker nights along with many other family members just waiting in line to lose their quarters.
Tom leaves behind to cherish his legacy, his loving wife Shirley Stump of 49 years, and his sisters, Sabrina, Cheryl, and Shannon. His sons: Tommy (Shabeth) of Texas, and Andy of Elkview. His daughters: Shatawna of Texas, Jeannie of Elkview, Lesley of Elkview, Mandy (Jeff Tucker) of Sissonville, Paula (John Smolder) of Elkview, and Tammi (Kevin Chapman) of Elkview. Grandchildren: Trevor, Taylor, Cayden, Brenan, Ashley, Kyle and Alaina all of Texas.
