Gertrude “Gertie” Mae Samples Nichols, 95, of Clendenin, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, July 13, 2026.
She was born at Bomont, West Virginia, on December 30, 1930, a daughter of the late Okey O. and Bertie Metheney Samples.
Gertie was a faithful Member of Thorofare Community Church in Clendenin, WV. She lived an exemplary Christian life for the Lord. She was cherished by her family and friends for her kind heart and willingness to help when needed. A shining example of Christian character to all who met her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William T. Nichols, siblings Vida Marie Hill, Chester Boone Samples, Mabel Della Samples, Wayne Concil Samples, Opal M. Smith, Maxine Eula Mullins, Waitman Barron Samples, and Clark H. Samples.
Left to cherish her memory are sisters Betty Snyder of Big Chimney, WV and Dottie Taylor of Indian Head, MD; and brother Dale Samples of Elkview, WV; children Dave (Karen) Taylor of Clendenin, WV and Sandy (Jim) Thompson of Clendenin, WV; step-sons Tom (Barb) Nichols and Greg (Jane) Nichols; grandchildren J.D. (Cheryl) Thompson, Traci (David) Adkins, and Brent (Jamie) Taylor; great-grandchildren Elizabeth Thompson, J.P. Thompson, Kyle Adkins, Casey Adkins, Autumn Taylor, Lily Taylor, Evie Taylor, and Brent Taylor II. She was also blessed with numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Stump-Matics Funeral Home, with Pastors Chuck Swiney and Clark Samples, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Boone Samples Cemetery, Bomont, WV.
