Alton Raymond “Al” Garten
Alton Raymond “Al” Garten, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, FL, with his devoted wife Leann by his side.
He was 88 years old. Al was born and raised in Charleston, WV and was the eldest son of Thomas and Thelma Garten. He graduated from Dupont High School and played independent baseball.
Al enlisted in the WV Army National Guard and was assigned to Hq Troop, 1st Recon Sq, 150th Armored Calvary. He completed his 6-year enlistment and was Honorably Discharged as a SP5. Al retired from Firestone Tires after 35 years of exemplary managerial service. While in WV, he was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Al coached and managed Little League and Senior League Midwestern Baseball and was a lifelong lover of the game.
Al is predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Thelma Garten, his sisters, Dreama Smith and Penny Monk.
He is survived by his wife Leann, brother Tom Garten, two sons, Jeff (Luann) and Craig (Kim), five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 12:00pm on January 10, 2026 at Hafer Funeral Home located at 50 N. Pinch Road, Elkview, WV. Burial will be at Cummings Cemetery immediately following the service.
