Lola Jo (Byrer) Samples, 88, of Charleston, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Brookdale Charleston Gardens – Assisted Living.
She was born on September 9, 1937, in Charleston, WV, a daughter of the late Frank ‘Big Foot’ Byrer and Eva Mae (Adkins) Byrer. Lola was widowed by her beloved husband, Spencer Dwight Samples, and was also preceded in death by her sister, Betty Ann Lynch.
Lola was a proud graduate of Charleston High School (Class of 55’), where she remained actively involved as a member of the reunion committee. She attended Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church at which she was formerly President of the Women’s Society, volunteered faithfully with Second Seating, and was honored as the Ambassador of Brookdale Assisted Living and Bingo caller, a role that reflected her warm spirit and welcoming nature.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Joe Samples (Susie), Michael Samples, and her bonus daughter, Cara Marchal; her grandchildren, Jason Samples (Kimra), Chris Samples (Amber), and her bonus granddaughter, Quinn Marchal (Skyler); and her great-grandchildren, Cameron, Alli, and Kailee. She is also survived by a host of extended family and friends who will miss her dearly.
Lola especially cherished the time she spent babysitting and caring for children, a role that brought her immense happiness and allowed her nurturing spirit to shine. She worked for many years at Workers’ Compensation and took pride in her career. Lola also greatly enjoyed her involvement as a former member of the IBEW Local Union 466 Women’s Auxiliary, where she valued the friendships and sense of community it provided.
Above all, Lola was a proud and devoted mother who loved her family dearly. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the center of her life, and she took great joy in their accomplishments, milestones, and everyday moments. Her love, encouragement, and unwavering support will forever remain in the hearts of those she cherished.
