Buford Troy “BT” Casto, 84, of Clendenin, passed away February 27, 2026.
He was born on October 6, 1941, in Given, West Virginia, a son of the late Earlie Hoyt Casto and Callie Dove Carney Casto. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Carl Casto, Art Casto, Hoy Casto, and Ralph Casto; his sisters, Carmen Bonnett, Marge Gillispie, and Emma Jean Smith; and granddaughter, Farrah Harrison.
BT was a storyteller, a competitor, a traveler, a sports fan, and above all, a family man. Raised on a farm in Given, WV, attended Ripley High School, and proudly served his country in the United States Army. He worked hard his entire life—from the Viscose Plant in Nitro to many years as a millwright—and he never lost the pride he had in hard work or the stories about the thousands of bales of hay he put up over the years.
He loved sports and competition. Whether coaching men’s softball in the 1970s, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and WVU, attending Herbert Hoover football games, or sitting down at the checkerboard determined to win, BT always brought his competitive spirit with him. If you ever played checkers with him, you probably heard him say it was nearly impossible to beat him.
BT loved church and music and took great joy in inviting Christian musicians to perform—especially his wife Sylvia and her sisters. He jokingly considered himself their manager. He also enjoyed spending time at the Elkview Senior Center and visiting with friends.
One of the things people will remember most about BT was his storytelling, which earned him the nickname “Windy.” Whether you had heard the story before or not, he told it with enthusiasm and made people laugh.
More than anything, he loved traveling across the United States and making memories with his wife, Sylvia. Their adventures together were some of his greatest joys.
BT leaves behind a loving family who will continue to share his stories, remember his laughter, and carry on the memories he helped create.
Surviving are his loving wife, Sylvia Hatcher Casto of Clendenin; son, Dana Casto of Ripley; daughters, Vicki Casto Dodd of Nitro, Stacy Casto of Hometown, Sharon Hatcher Ford of South Charleston, Paula Hatcher Nelson of Charleston; 12 living grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Stump-Matics Funeral Home, 8539 Elk River Road North, Clendenin, WV 25045. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Hoyt-Chandler Family Cemetery, Chandler Branch Road, Walton, WV.
Stump-Matics Funeral Home is honored to have been entrusted with BT’s final arrangements.
