James C. Johnson, III, known to family and friends as Joe, passed away on March 9, 2026, at the age of 79.

Joe spent his life dedicated to hard work and family. For his entire career, he worked in the heavy equipment construction industry, a field truly enjoyed. He took great pride in his work and valued the relationships with the many people he worked alongside. In addition to his work in construction, Joe and his wife Bonnie owned and operated a landscaping and construction company and were Christmas tree growers.

Joe was a true outdoorsman. Over the years he developed a passion for muzzleloading and was especially proud to have been a state champion in tomahawk throwing. Joe’s favorite time of year was “buck season”. He was also a proud member of the Masonic fraternity.

Above all, Joe’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter, Amber Dopkowski and her husband Jerry, and his son, Jimmy Johnson and his wife Lea Ann. Joe was a proud grandfather to Reece and Hadley.

Joe took particular pride in supporting his son Jimmy’s wrestling career. He was a constant presence beside the mat, never missing a match.

Joe will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of a good hunting story and his devotion to his family.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 13, 2026, at Stemple Cemetery on Sinking Springs Road in Mount Zion, West Virginia, with Rev. Rick Metheney officiating. Stump Funeral Home & Cremation, Inc., 1440 Arnoldsburg Rd., Arnoldsburg, WV, is honored to serve the Johnson family. Online condolences can be shared with Joe’s family at www.stumpfuneralhomes.com
