Grover “Sonny” D. Hopkins, 72, of Clendenin, WV, went home to be with the Lord on March 23, 2026, at Hubbard Hospice House following a long illness.
Born in Charleston on February 22, 1954, he was the son of the late Bennie Edward and Janet Vivian Hopkins. Sonny spent his life behind the wheel, making his living as a professional driver for Greyhound, KRT, and Kanawha County Schools.
When he wasn’t on the clock, he found his freedom on the open road on his motorcycle or with a guitar in his hands. More than his work and hobbies, Sonny was defined by his heart. He never knew a stranger and was the first to offer the shirt off his back or help anyone in need.
Above all, he cherished the time spent with his family and those closest to him. In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his sister, Anna Thompson. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife of 38 years, Beverly Hopkins of Clendenin; his daughters, Jo Ann Ensminger (Jody) of Elkview and Amanda Sanders (David Cyrus) of South Charleston; and his beloved grandchildren, Gracie Bickham, Isaiah Sanders, and Tristan Walker all of South Charleston. He is also survived by his siblings, Benny Hopkins (Patty) of Cannelton, Cathy Schlang (Neil) of Ringgold, GA, Emil Tucker (Clifford) of Charleston, and Karen Morton of Rand, along with a large extended family of 13 nephews and 8 nieces.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00pm Monday, March 30, 2026 at Stump-Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin with pastors Jerry Naylor, Matt Chapman and Pete Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. A graveside service will follow at Conley Cemetery in Corton, WV. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow the interment at the Clendenin Recreation Center, 4 1st St., Clendenin, WV. Online condolences can be shared with the Hopkins family at www.stumpfuneralhomes.com
