With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we share that William “Joe” Lee Smith, 80, of Poca, WV passed away on April 23, 2026.
Joe was born on January 21, 1946, in Plymouth, WV. He lived his life with steadiness, quiet strength, and a sense of humor that often appeared when you least expected it. He believed in showing up, doing things the right way (or at least his way), and taking care of the people he loved.
Joe was a man of simple pleasures: morning coffee, his favorite rocking chair, tinkering, gardening, hunting, fishing, and riding horses. He had a gift for offering advice that was brief, practical, and almost always correct—sometimes discovered only later. He wasn’t one for long speeches, but when he spoke, people listened.
As a father, he led by example. He taught patience, perseverance, and responsibility, often without realizing he was teaching at all. His love was steady and dependable, shown in everyday moments and small sacrifices.
He is survived by his loving wife Judy of Poca, WV, son Justin Smith (Carrie) of Charleston, WV, daughter Mamie Smith (Mark) of Dunbar, WV, daughter Janet Lothes (Ian) of Hurricane, WV, brother John Smith (Tina) of Cross Lanes, WV, and sister Marla Snead of Chesapeake, WV, who will miss his presence, wisdom, and humor more than words can express. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Mamie Smith; his sisters Jewell Siders, Ida Arthur, and Carla Snead.
A celebration of life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 3:30, at Ridenour Park, Nitro, WV – Shelter 4. Family and friends are welcome to attend and remember a man who didn’t seek attention but left a lasting impression.
The family wants to thank Hospice and Primary Care for their care of Joe.
He will be deeply missed and always remembered, exactly as he was.
