Stephanie Sue Matheny, 79, of Elkview, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

She was born on January 7, 1947, to Robert and Mary Smith. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and served in the AWANA program. She also worked on a bus route and was known for her role on Judgement Island.

Despite physical and mental disabilities, she had an amazing life. She loved horses and rode her horse Penny daily. She graduated high school and went on to gain her barbering license with the help of her dear friend Karen Messinger. Stephanie became an icon in Elkview and never met a stranger. If she cut your hair, and got to know you, then, she never forgot you. She loved the Lord and was faithful in sharing her faith with others. When she married her late husband, Don, they went on many adventures together, exploring the state of WV. They had a wonderful life, full of love and happiness.

Their friends, Steve and Brenda Graham became a constant in her life and after Don’s passing. She became more than a friend, but an extended member of their family, enjoying meals, holidays, and vacations with them.

She is survived by her husband’s siblings, Mary Helen Sanford (Bob), Nancy Sue Meador (Ed), Bob Dutch Matheny (Betsy), Carol Jean Walker (John), Larry Allen Matheny (Debbie), Barb Ann Matheny, and adopted daughter, Kimberly Martin.

A service will begin 1:00pm, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Hafer Funeral Home, with Pastor Lee Swor officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 12:00pm – 1:00pm at the funeral home.

Online condolences may be sent to haferfuneralhome.net

Arrangements are in the care of Hafer Funeral Home, 50 North Pinch Road, Elkview, WV 25071.
