James Andrew “Jim” Ballard passed away peacefully at his home in Nitro on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, surrounded by the memories of a life well lived.
Born and raised in West Virginia, Jim graduated from St. Albans High School in 1967. In 1968, he proudly joined the United States Army and served in Germany as a Sergeant Tank Commander. Following his military service, Jim began a long career in the automotive industry, working for Chrysler in Michigan before retiring from South Charleston Stamping and Manufacturing. Along the way, he also helped operate a beloved family mini golf business in St. Albans, where many friends and families shared lasting memories.
Jim had a passion for life and enjoyed many hobbies throughout the years. He loved riding Jet Skis, admiring antique cars, listening to old country music, collecting unique treasures, thrifting, and trying his luck gambling. More than anything, Jim cherished time spent with his family and friends.
He is survived by his sons, Daniel Ballard and wife Jodi, and Jeffery Adam Ballard and wife Robin; stepdaughter Amy Sharpe and husband Kevin; stepson Roger Lyons; grandchildren Jacob Ballard, Noah Ballard, Brooklyn Ballard, and Carsyn Ballard; brothers Wayne Ballard and John Ballard and wife Laura Adkins; nieces and nephews Ronnie Ballard, Carey Schaeffer, and Jason Ballard; former spouses Brenda Adams and Drema Gallimore Ballard; and his dear friend Sarah Webb.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William “Boots” Ballard and Reba Ballard, and stepfather Tex Jones; as well as his brother Clinton Ballard and wife Becky and sister-in-law Jean Ballard.
Jim will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of family, his sense of humor, and the many stories and memories he shared with those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A tribute to the life of Jim will be 12:00 PM Friday, May 29, 2026, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Donel C. Kinnard State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.
