On August 4, 2026, Watenia (Wright) Alley, 79, of Glasgow, West Virginia, passed away, leaving behind a family she loved beyond measure, generations of students she inspired, and a community made better by her kindness.
Known to generations of families throughout the Upper Kanawha Valley as “Mrs. Alley,” Watenia taught earth, life, and physical science at Cedar Grove Community and Middle School for more than 35 years. Teaching was more than a career to her, it was a calling. She loved inspiring young minds and took great pride in the lasting relationships she built with her students. She was always delighted to reconnect with former students wherever she went.
Watenia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was an exceptional cook who could make just about anything, and she was especially known among family and friends for her stuffed mushrooms, homemade bread, and pepperoni rolls. She also loved music and enjoyed singing and playing both the piano and guitar.
Above all, Watenia cherished her family. She loved deeply, celebrated every accomplishment, and was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren. Becoming a great-grandmother in 2025 brought her tremendous joy, and she delighted in having a little one in the family again.
Watenia was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Pauline Wright; her sister, Claudia Wilson; and her beloved husband, Robert G. “Bob” Alley. After 21 years apart, she is now reunited with Bob, the love of her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Sara King (Ryan), Adam Alley (Sara), and Jamie Alley; the children of her heart, Randall Wright (Renay) and Lori Barron (Al); her brother, Rick Wright (Brenda); her beloved grandchildren, Cooper, Emma, Jake, Julianna, Kara, and Kathryn; her great-granddaughter Amelia (Jake and Brenna); as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
The lessons Watenia taught reached far beyond the classroom. Her kindness, wisdom, and love will continue to live on in the family she cherished and in the many students whose lives she helped shape.
Service will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, 600 Old Fort St, Cedar Grove, WV 25039 with Pastor Charlie Mays officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.
