Betty Jane Monday, 79, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, at Sweetbriar Assisted Living in Dunbar, following a long journey with dementia.
Betty was born December 21, 1946, in Jackson County, WV, to the late James A. and Ethel Crane White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 33 years, Carroll D. Monday; her brothers, David White and Jerry White; and her former husband and the father of her daughter, Okey E. Lanham.
She is survived by her sister, Joyce Barnett; her daughter, Lisa J. Lanham; her grandchildren, Benjamin Oxley and Samantha Oxley; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was a 1965 graduate of Ripley High School. She worked for Simmons General Store in Kenna for more than 20 years, where she loved selling flooring and furniture—and never missed an opportunity to participate in the local gossip along the way. After relocating to the Hurricane area, she went on to work for Lowe’s until her retirement in 2015.
In retirement, Betty enjoyed reading, shopping, and searching for a good deal at garage and estate sales, where she was known for driving a hard bargain. Her independent spirit, strong opinions, and love for a good bargain will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Per Betty’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A private graveside service will be held in the fall at Casto-Crane Cemetery in Fairplain for both Carroll and Betty.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sleep in Heavenly Peace – WV, Jackson Co., PO Box 249, Ripley, WV 25271.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sweetbriar for the care they gave Betty, as well as to HospiceCare-Charleston. The family takes great comfort in knowing that Betty is finally at peace, with her mind, body, and spirit fully restored.
