In Loving Memory of Danny Joe Lucas
June 13, 1947 – October 27, 2026 • Age 79
Danny Joe Lucas, 79, passed away on October 27, 2026. He leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, cherished memories, and a family who will forever hold him close in their hearts.
Born on June 13, 1947, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Danny was the son of Herschel E. Lucas and Jo Walden Lucas. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his brother, Donal G. Lucas.
Danny spent his working years serving the West Virginia Department of Highways as a mechanic and equipment operator. He took pride in his work and was known for his strong personality, quick wit, and unmistakable sense of humor.
Above all, Danny was a devoted husband and father. He shared his life with his beloved wife, JoAnn Gunno Lucas, and was a proud father to Angela S. (Red) Foster (Greg) and Kathy J. (Gert) Renner (Bill). His family was his greatest blessing, and he took great joy in the generations that followed him.
He was a proud grandfather to Alyssa (Charlie) Lucas (Russell); Ethan (E-Man) Foster (Danielle); Brett (Chandler Bean) Morrison (Courtney); Perry (Diddlebug) Morrison; Sophie (Turtle Toes) Renner; and William Lucas (Lukie) Renner. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Addy and Brookie, who brought even more joy to his growing family.
Danny’s heart had room for family in every form. He held a special place in his life for his bonus daughters and son: Vickie Marcum (Dennis), Terry Shrader (Mark), and Woodrow E. Edwards. His bonus grandchildren included Derek Edwards (Brittany), Heather Snyder, Codie Edwards (Maria), Keoni (Rice-A-Roni) Shrader, Erica (Mousey) Endicott, Abbi Tury, Colton Short, and Hunter Cottrell. He was also blessed with five bonus great-grandchildren: Jordan, Nolan, Colt, Cohen, and Derek Jr. The love he shared with his extended family was a meaningful part of his life, and those bonds will continue through the memories they treasure. Danny is also survived by his sisters, Sylvia V. Smith and Rebecca (Becky) Lucas, both of Saline, Indiana.
Danny had received Jesus into his life and faithfully served Him. He was an avid student of Scripture, a man of prayer, and had a deep passion for others to come to know Jesus personally. His faith was an important part of his life and the love he shared with those around him.
Danny was a man with a personality all his own. He could be contrary when he wanted to be, and he certainly wasn’t afraid to speak his mind! His quick wit, playful teasing, and habit of giving everyone a nickname made him unforgettable. Those who knew him best knew that behind his stubborn ways was a heart full of love. His nicknames and stories will undoubtedly bring smiles and laughter for years to come.
An animal lover through and through, Danny had a special fondness for animals, and his beloved dog, Skipper, was a treasured companion.
Danny enjoyed the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life, including camping, hunting, and fishing. He also loved good food, especially sweets! If there was something delicious to eat, he was always happy to enjoy it. He especially treasured fellowship with friends and family at Elk River Nazarene Church. One of his favorite traditions was attending the Men’s Wednesday morning Bible study, where he enjoyed fellowship, drinking coffee, and eating three donuts – even though he knew they would raise his blood sugar. Those moments of faith, friendship, and good company meant so much to him.
Danny leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and love. He will be remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, his love of animals, his enjoyment of the outdoors, his sweet tooth, his faith, and his one-of-a-kind personality. He had a way of making himself known and leaving an impression on everyone he met.
Though his passing leaves a tremendous void, his spirit will live on in the stories told around family tables, the laughter shared among friends, the nicknames that will never be forgotten, and the love and faith he passed on through the generations.
He was loved deeply, will be missed beyond measure, and will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elk River Nazarene Church, 143
