David Jerry Mullins, 87, of Alexandria, VA passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026.
Born to the late Bud and Martha Salisbury Mullins on December 3, 1938, he was one of 13 children. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings Chilton, Ralph, Mildred, Virginia, Margaret, Basil, Mary, Bethel, Sidney, Sue, Patricia, and Faye, his daughter Sarah Zilius and grandson Drew Zilius.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Regina Taylor Mullins, five children David Mullins, Kathryn Mullins, Liz Cordeiro (Tony), Jonathan Mullins and Chloe Mullins Taylor (Troy), along with five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A graduate of Clendenin High School, he moved to the Washington, DC area in 1956, where he made his home for the next 70 years. He began his career with the telephone company, developing an encyclopedic knowledge of the region’s major thoroughfares—something he took pride in and drew upon throughout his life. A dedicated civil servant, he spent many years with the Department of Defense and also served as a Brookings Institution Fellow for Congressman Alan Mollohan of West Virginia.
Jerry found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved the outdoors, always in search of the next fishing spot, and was an avid gardener with a remarkable ability to help anything grow and thrive. He was a wealth of knowledge who never met a stranger, always ready to strike up a conversation. He was adventurous, had a great sense of humor and incredibly strong spirit, with him until the very end.
