She was there for my first breath – and I was there for her last.
It is with the deepest sorrow I share that my mother, Beverly Casto,
passed away late last night at the Hubbard Hospice House. Her
sudden illness took her health so quickly – but not her persevering
spirit. Thank you to all that assisted us during her final journey.
Your kindness and love have been felt. Knowing she is no longer in
pain and now with Dad brings great comfort. Love, Debbi
Beverly A. Casto passed away with her daughter by her side on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at the Hospice Hubbard House after a brief illness.
Beverly was born in Duluth, MN. She and her sisters grew up on Pike Lake. Summer days in the sun playing in the lake and woods while building snowmen and sledding in the cold snowy winters of this northern area of Minnesota.
As a teenager Beverly enjoyed roller skating with friends at the local arena. It was there a few years later she met the man she would marry. Tom was stationed with the Air Force at the base located in Duluth. He was an accomplished skater living far from his home of Nitro, WV. He asked Bev to skate and she said “Only if we don’t fall”. And guess what…they tripped each other and were together for the rest of their lives from that point. Tom and Bev were married for 66 years before his death in 2025.
They moved back to Nitro, WV in the early 1960’s. Bev worked at the Bank of Nitro. It was a good way to get to know the people of her new home town. It was also during this time their daughter was born.
Bev enjoyed learning and started college at WV State College earning her degree in Psychology. During the same time she was busy with daughter Debbi’s activities including being a Girl Scout troop leader. She took the troop on numerous educational outings, camping trips and doing community service projects. It was always a fun time with Mrs. Casto in the lead.
A nursing degree was always something Bev wanted in order to help people. So she did just that. Beverly Casto, RN graduated from Morris Harvey – University of Charleston then started her 36-year career with Charleston Area Medical Center. Most of her early years she spent working on the new “Care Unit” for Substance Abuse. Bev also worked other nursing roles at CAMC and at local businesses. Her longest tenure was in Employee Health – Memorial Division. It brought Bev joy to help the employees of CAMC and work with a great team.
When Bev wasn’t working she was traveling – to many states and countries overseas, cruising and traveling back to her Minnesota home. She and Tom spent many summers with family and friends “up north” at their camp.
Beverly was preceded in death by her parents Edith Johnson Romfoe and Russell Johnson, nephew Kirk Casto, brother-in-law Corky Casto and brother-in-law Michael Johnston of Champlin, MN.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughter Debbi Casto of Cross Lanes, sister Shirlie Johnston of Champlin, MN, Barbara Williams (Roger) of Duluth, MN, nieces Kelly Getchman (Gary) of Lakeville, MN, Melissa Stall (Brandon) of Two Harbors, MN, nephew Bob Johnston (Liz) of Hanover, MN,
Sister-in-law Evelyn Casto of Nitro, nephews Rusty Casto of Nitro, and Bill Casto (Rebecca) of Hurricane.
Bev also has 6 great-nieces and great-nephews and many cousins that will miss her.
A celebration of Bev’s life will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026, at 1 p.m., at Cooke Funeral Home, Nitro with Rev Brandon Moll officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, WV. A gathering of family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service.
Debbi wants everyone to know that her Mom and Dad are “Reunited and it feels so good.”
