Harold Lee Atkins, 95, of Dupont City passed away peacefully in his home on May 29, 2026 surrounded by his two sons after a recent battle with dementia.
Harold was born on January 29, 1931 in Looneyville, West Virginia to the late Della R. and Lona Monroe Atkins. Harold loved his family and friends dearly and his steady spirit will live on forever as they carry on his legacy.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife of 50 years, Phyllis Hill Atkins; siblings, Mildred Miller (Brooks), Juanita Edgell (Leon), Della R Atkins Jr. and Betty Gandee (Eugene).
Harold is survived by his sons, Joey B. Caruthers (Wendy) of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Neil J. Caruthers (Ellen) of Dupont City; grandchildren, Mindy Caruthers of DuPont City, Eric Caruthers of Belle, Jennifer Howell (Brian) and Jamie Caruthers of Virginia Beach; great grandchildren, Jackson Caruthers of Dupont City and Quinn, Reese, Rori and Emersen Howell of Virginia Beach and special nieces, Judy Miller and Pam Erwin of Looneyville..
Harold is a graduate of Spencer High School. In November of 1951 he joined the United States Air Force where he served for 5 years. His training and tours while serving included F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming, France, and Manhattan Beach AF Station, Brooklyn, NY. After being Honorably Discharged, he began a successful career with Teamsters Local 175 as a Commercial Truck Driver at McLean Trucking of Hurricane, West Virginia.
Harold met the love of his life, Phyllis in 1970 and was not only gifted a lifelong partner, but also gained the joy of two sons. After getting married on February 27, 1971 he stepped right into the role of dad and never looked back. He spent many days hunting with Neil and their favorite English Setters as well as traveling to watch Joey play basketball, but his favorite activity was sitting on the porch with Phyllis and their beagles keeping watch on the neighborhood.
After retiring, Harold spent his time doing what he loved most: visiting local race tracks, turning wrenches in the garage, bidding on items at the local auction, catching a football game on Friday nights, or working with friends at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home.
On Sundays Harold would attend Sunday school where he got to listen to his favorite teacher, Jack, then sitting in the back pew of Judson Baptist Church listening to his beloved wife sing, followed by an afternoon in front of the TV enjoying a NASCAR race with his great grandson, Jackson. He touched the lives of many people and was thankful and humbled by the many friends he made along the way.
Our dear Father, Grandfather, Uncle and Friend Harold will be missed beyond measure, but his family takes lasting comfort in the way he always ended their conversations, making sure to get the final word in by telling them, ‘I love you more.’
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2026 at Fidler and Frame Funeral Home, with family friend Jack Whitt officiating. Entombment will follow the service at Tyler Mt. Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, West Virginia. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
