Ronald Lee Shafer, 53, of Elkview, West Virginia, passed away on March 1, 2026.
Born on March 27, 1972, Ron was a proud graduate of Herbert Hoover High School, Class of 1990. He was a man who loved deeply, laughed easily, and never missed a chance for an adventure.
Ron was preceded in death by his father, Esper Shafer; his sisters, Tina Shafer and Cheryl Shafer; his nephews, Joshua Shafer and Michael Lersch; his maternal grandparents, Orville and Edna Strickland; and his paternal grandparents, Esper and Myrtle Shafer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tabitha McComas; his son, Matthew Shafer; his mother and stepfather, Carol and Forrest Holley; his brother, Todd Shafer; and his sister, T. Sam (Jim) Hicks. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: CJ Gore; Aaron (Emmalee) Shafer; Jameson Shafer; Hannah (Daniel) Ray; Joseph (Cassandra) Ray; Nicholas Hicks; and Aleigha Hicks.
Ron was blessed with many great-nieces and great-nephews who brought him tremendous joy: Brenleigh, Madilyn, and Kholson Shafer; Sadie and Charlotte Gunnoe; Michael and Gracie Ray; and Conor and Benjamin Adkins.
During childhood, Ron was the leader of countless adventures. He guided his cousins and little sister all over the hills of Wills Creek, exploring trails, creating stories, going coon hunting with his uncles and cousins, and making memories that would last a lifetime. That adventurous spirit never left him.
Ron cherished time spent with family, traveling, catching up with friends, attending church, and participating in Bible study. He loved talking with people and truly listening to their stories, especially when sharing memories of growing up in the Appalachian Mountains.
For the past three years, Ron fought cancer with strength and determination. He faced his battle with courage and leaned firmly on his faith. While cancer may have taken his body, it never took his spirit. Ron is now healed and resting in the glory of God.
A Celebration of Life dinner will be held at Jordan Light Baptist Church on Friday, March 6, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to come, share a meal, and share memories of Ron and pay their last respects.
Ron’s legacy of faith, love, laughter, and adventure will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
