~ Obituary courtesy of David Lucas.
My son, John Curtis Lucas, 45 of Elkview, WV, born March 26, 1981 – departed this life on April 16, 2026. His life ended tragically, with great violence after being run over by an EMS driver. He then was drug on the highway for over 2 miles, leaving a trail of blood; marking the path of travel. His arm being ripped from his body, his screams filled the air. Driver and EMS acknowledged hearing John’s desperate screams as they relayed this information to their 911, asking if they should stop? They were told to stop. But continued driving till John’s body was expelled. Without regard to human life and refusing to stop and render aid, they drug my son – to his death. The story that the EMS people has changed and the reporting of the news has been greatly flawed. This one day will be rectified. John’s life was snuffed out so undeservingly, and justice for John will prevail.
John leaves behind his family, friends and community that understood and loved him. The family thanks all those that called, responded by text, brought in food and where there for our family. We would like to thank all those that looked out for John – by giving him rides when he was walking, giving him something to eat when they thought he may be hungry, giving him a place to crash when it was cold, raining or when they thought he needed a place to stay.
Everyone who knew John knew, that after his car wreck he suffered brain damage that altered his life. This affected his reasoning, his ability to think straight, to make good decisions. But, in spite all this, he still lived life on his terms. We as a family knew that John struggled with many things but, he still professed his love for God and for his family.
So, to his teammates that played baseball with him – he will always be know as the “secret weapon.” To the one that played basketball with him at all hours of the night, as they watched him shot 3 pointers all night, in all kinds of weather. To all those that cheered him on when he was in the Tough Man Contest, he will always be known as …. Ja- Ja- Ja- John Lucas!
But John’s suffering is now over the God he loved has greeted him and took him to His house – and I, and his family will one day meet again.
A special thanks to Judy McLenathan who oversees his apartment complex at Roseland Apartments, who was so kind, understanding and tolerant.
He was proceeded in death by his mother, Brenda Kay Lucas. Paternal grandparents, Roy and Betty Lucas. Maternal Grandparents, Howard and Ruth Ashworth.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his father, Rodney David Lucas. Brothers – Carl (Kami) Lucas, Adam (Erica) Lucas. Sister – Lora (Chris) Jett. Nephews – River, Reed, Van Lucas, Maven (Alivia) Mullins. Nieces: Haley (Bradley) Harvey, Kayla Jo Mullins, Sailor Lucas. Great nephew, Roman Funk, many uncles, aunts and cousins.
