Richard Allen “Rick” Pettigrew, Jr., 61, of Charleston, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Rick was a lifelong resident of Charleston’s West Side and a true neighborhood original. A graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, he was known for his intelligence, quick wit, and unforgettable sense of humor. Rick had a remarkable gift for making people laugh, even on their hardest days, and his presence brought joy to everyone who knew him.

Known affectionately by many as the “Hood Uber,” Rick was always willing to lend a helping hand or provide a ride to anyone in need. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives throughout the community.

In his younger years, Rick was an exceptional athlete and loved sharing stories of his youthful adventures, from touching the bottom of a traffic signal to the unforgettable tale of running through a bank’s glass window. He was a devoted college football fan who faithfully cheered for Oklahoma, Miami, USC, UCLA, and Nebraska. One of his favorite memories was attending his first NFL game with his favorite cousin, Toby. Rick was also Michael Jackson’s biggest fan and had a lifelong love for animals, especially dogs, always making sure he had a faithful companion to care for.

Above all else, Rick treasured his family. His greatest love was for his parents, whom he deeply cherished throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Richard and Betty Pettigrew, and his brother, Billy Williams.

Rick leaves behind to cherish his memory, his nephew, B.J. Edmondson; his nieces, Amanda Gordon and Brittany Barnes; his beloved cousin, Toby; and a host of other loving family members and dear friends who will forever remember his laughter, kindness, generous spirit, and unwavering love for those around him.

Though he is no longer with us, Rick’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Forever in our hearts, we will love you always.

A tribute to the life of Rick will be 12:00 PM Wednesday July 22, 2026, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Carl “Bo” Terrell, Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
